Hydrogen Austria - the Austrian Hydrogen Cluster

Combining knowledge to generate solutions: Hydrogen Austria pools the technological and economic expertise of enterprises, research institutes and platforms from all over Austria in the area of hydrogen technology.

Hydrogen Austria pools Austria's expertise in the field of hydrogen

When it comes to energy transition, climate protection and environmental sustainability or innovation, economic growth, competitive ability and jobs, there's simply no way around hydrogen.

Numerous public and private institutions in Austria are successfully active not only in the research and development of hydrogen technology, but also in its production and use. On the initiative of the Federal Ministry for Digital and Economic Affairs (BMDW) and the State of Tyrol, these institutions are pooling their strengths in the Hydrogen Austria, the Austrian hydrogen cluster, enabling them to mutually benefit from each other's knowledge, to consolidate their expertise and enhance their national and international visibility.

Collectively fighting the climate crisis with hydrogen

To attain the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement, Austria has pledged to drastically reduce its CO2 emissions:

  • It aims to emit 40 % less carbon dioxide in 2030 than it did in 2005
  • It plans to be climate-neutral by 2050

Hydrogen is set to play a vital role in attaining these ambitious objectives. The cluster Hydrogen Austria is supporting Austria's key hydrogen players with a wide spectrum of services

Hydrogen Austria is strengthening Austria's hydrogen activities

Hydrogen is considered to be an effective solution in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in hard-to-decarbonise sectors. This applies, in particular, to areas in which direct electrification is difficult or even impossible. Examples of such sectors are heavy goods transport and steel production.

The European hydrogen strategy is geared towards the use of hydrogen in all sectors, with a primary focus on so-called green hydrogen, which is produced using renewable energy sources. Hydrogen Austria is making an important contribution to this in pooling Austria's technological and economic hydrogen expertise.
